Gavin has been talking about when it will be HIS turn to bring the "estimation jar" home from school. I have been hearing him....probably just not listening to him very well. WELL -- yesterday was the day! He brought home the infamous ESTIMATION JAR.
He had it all planned out. He was going to bring at least 21 cars(cuz that's how many are in his class) so that when the kids got done guessing how many were in there, he could hand each child their very own, nice (old) car car from our toy collection. Very generous offer on his part. As I got looking at the cars -- I think a bit of selfishness crept in. I saw lots of dollars that went into purchasing those cars. I tried for hours to explain to him that he didn't need to give away those cars. He would have nothing of it. He even said he would contribute his own $7 toward the cause so he could give them all to his friends. He said "Shane was going to give them to us but his Mom didn't write a note, so all you have to do is write a note and Mrs. C will let me give them away." So I thought and I thought -- I still couldn't bring myself to give away that many of our cars. I still have to teach preschool next year -- those cars do a lot for playtime.:)
Finally, my Mom brain kicked in. (It usually takes a while) I asked him if we could send granola bars. "no", fruit snacks "no", fruit by the foot "no", goldfish, cheese crackers???ANYTHING from my awesome coupon stash??? "NO!"
I convinced him to come downstairs and look at the food to see what he wanted to bring -- LOW AND BEHOLD -- there they were -- sitting in a dark corner. THE PEPPERMINT LIFESAVERS!!! (and they literally were, for he and I) Gavin was so excited about them, he ran back upstairs, grabbed the estimation jar and started counting -- "184 MOM!!! This is gonna be soooo awsome. I have way more than Alec did. The kids are NEVER gonna be able to guess how many I have." He proceeded to write in the estimation book "It is lifesavers. Yahoo!" Along with a great picture of lifesavers in a jar.
WOW -- who knew lifesavers could be such a LIFESAVER!!!

Mrs. Chambers here, ready to report the results of the estimation jar moment. As each student made their guess that had to be "over 100 and under 200" Gavin stood holding the jar with a HUGE smile on his face. Lily took her shot and estimated 185 which caused Gavin to gasp (still smiling). Teacher made the da-da-da-da-da-da-ta-da drum roll and Gavin yells "there's 184"! Lily beamed. Using his quick math skills Gavin announced to our class of 21-- "I think there is enough for everyone to have two each!" Guess what? He estimated that correctly. Pays to go to kindergarten every day!
So cool!! So fun to see Gavin having such fun! Love those grandkids!
I dunno, I am thinking the cars would have been fun for Mrs. C to have rolling around on the desks making noise :) Love GavinWavin Man.....~Aunt Rene
