Madeira Canyon Challenge

Sitting with not much to do one day, Gavin said "Mom, could I organize a neighborhood bike race?"  Quickly my brain scrambled "how much work will this be for me? are there better things he could be doing? Will others be interested in his idea? " After a second I said..."Sure. let's get to work"  Above Gavin is directing his first "Madeira Canyon Challenge"  He pulled it off without a hitch!  The invites he made were as follows:
Gavin and Libbie’s
First ever bike race!
Everyone will get a ribbon ~ no competition.

1.             Location: Powerline trail head at bottom of xxxxx St.

2.             Day and Time: Saturday, December 30th  at 9:30 A.M Please arrive at 9:15

3.             Gavin’s parents will be there to help. If your parents can help, please have them come too.

4.             Race length: Ages 8 and under: 2 laps
Ages 9 and up: 4 laps
1 lap = to xxxx St. and back

5.             Helmets required.

6.             Questions: Call Gavin at 555-5555
The crowds came from near and far (okay really  just near, after all it was for our neighborhood:))

I'm pretty sure Libbie was on a date with her Dad when the planning went down but when she found out she was planning this too - she helped deliver invites and make medals.

And away they went.  The path is about a mile -- so it was a pretty good ride.  We had some kids throw up, some lose their breath and think they were dying...and some who were determined to WIN (even though there was no winner)

Here is our 2nd place winner of the long ride -- remember, no winners - he would have gotten 1st but his chain fell off on the last lap -- during his after ride interview his competitor said "ya, I got lucky when Gavin's chain fell off"  Gavin got lucky too -- an adult was right there to help him put it back on so he could get 2nd place.

We were all pretty proud of our race bibs and medals we made.  Our medals were made out of shrinky dinks -- fun!

What a fun time -- it was held on New Years Eve morning -- I think we have our "Eve" traditions set!

Gavin and his buddies...Glad they have each other!
Here is our 3rd place "winner" I think she secretly let her brother and Gavin fight it out for 1st.  She could  have taken them both!  I have to say I love this girl -- she is sweet as can be.  Thanks for coming Audry!!

The world belongs to creative, energetic kids, who are supported by wonderful neighbors and caring parents. I can't think of a better
to celebrate The morning of New Years Eve.

We are proud of all of you and love you all so much.

Yes, please make that an annual tradition. The weather couldn't have been better and the whole event was an absolute blast! Thanks for including us. Way to go, Gavin and Libbie. A huge success.
