Responsibilities

This picture shows a lot more than a family that just finished a good LARP (Live Action Role Play - Garrett's latest obsession) at a park on Coronado Island.

It goes much deeper than that.  You see, we give our children a weekly allowance.  With that allowance they are required to contribute 10% to charity, 25% to savings for college and missions and then they can spend the rest.  As parents we no longer buy them toys(except for birthdays and Christmas), shoes or socks.

That said - let's check out this photo.

Garrett - still wearing shoes from the school year(will not buy flip flops for summer) and no socks because he wanted to spend his money on the "weapons" they used to LARP.

Gavin - wearing Garrett's old sandals (paid Garrett $5 for them) his big toe hangs out becuase they are falling apart.  He hasn't had socks since about May (unless he raids his brothers drawer)

Libbie - same flip flops from last summer.  They are supposed to be green but they are closer to brown.  She did buy herself some socks.  (yeah libbie!)

Dad - showing a good example by still wearing the Chaco sandals that Aunt Kenna gave him in 2005.

They are all gearing up to buy shoes for school but they are not excited about the dent it will make in their bank accounts.  I am hoping for some choices that cause failure -- how else will they learn?  You have to "taste the bitter to know the sweet."

Here's to hoping for children with shoes on their feet!
