prepare, plant and pray

Our Bishopric came up with an awesome idea. Us "suburban folk" don't get a huge chance to garden. Some of us have small plots in our small yards, but lots of us don't. They decided to chat with the local Korean Baptist Church, who own a large undeveloped lot, to see if we could borrow the land for a community garden. What good people they are -- they said yes! Us Eborns are lucky because it's right across the street from our house.

We also have a farm across the street from out house...so, Farmer Jaques came over to plow up the land for us a couple of times. We tilled in some turkey poop -- yes, you heard me, turkey poop....and we were off.

Tonight was the big night -- planting night. People came from near and far -- okay, mostly near. But lots of people came and we got a huge lot planted in about 3 hours. WOW!!!! Many hands make light work....(it was still kinda hard work) but it was done quick.

I am a bit tired, thus the silly writing on the pictures.

We're excited to teach our kids, not only with our own garden, but with the community garden how to work and especially how to work together as a community. Bring on the produce....we hope.:)

What a cool idea! Truely an inspired man. It reminds me of a little book called "Seed Folk". About how a community garden transforms an inner city neighborhood. Sounds boring but you ought to read it I consider it one of my favorites.

We had a lot of fun tonight too. When I was bathing the dirt and turkey poop (I guess) off the kids tonight they were already looking forward to having weeds grow so they can go pick them. It will be fun to work together as families and friends and to see what happens.

So...does each family have a section? How do you divide watering and weeding responsiblities? How do you divide the produce? Unfortunately, I know those that would skip the work and enjoy the harvest. Just curious...it seems like an awesome idea.

It will be a great experience for all who join in and work together on this project. And there really is nothing much better than a turkey poop flavored turnip.

It was fun. I am really glad no picutres of me bending over showed up. Lets just leave it at that. Our kids asked when we get to go back over and weed the garden. Oh if only they could be this excited about cleaning their room.

There's nothing better than eating the fruits of your labor. Gardening is a great thing for all to know how to do. You never know when it'll come in handy. Great ward.

What a wonderful idea. Hope all will come back for the weeding.
They will have a wonderful feeling
knowing they produced the wonderful
food they will eat and store. Loved
your pics. See you this afternoon
when we come down to see Tanner for
his birthday and "Celtic Woman".
We'll hit three birds with one trip. Hope the kids will be there
so we can get some sweet kisses.
We will be there around 4:p.m.

Love Ya, Iris

It was so much fun. I'm looking forward to having my kids be involved in the whole process. Your pictures are much better than mine. (Soooo glad the one of me bending over is of my head, not the other end!)

Megan, that's awesome! What a fun area you live in. How nice to be able to borrow that huge plot. Looking forward to seeing how it develops. I'm going to add you to my blog's friend list, k? (Is that okay?) I'll send you an invite to mine. :)

It's truly a community garden, we all work together, no separate spots, and we all eat together. I'm not sure if weeding assignments will be made, there is a watering system in place and really -- I think it's all gonna be great -- together.:)

Nicole, yes!, add me to your list -- i didn't even know you had a blog. Thanks!
