...or not! Last week our kids came running in from school telling us they voted for McCain because if Obama were President he would make them be in school for several more hours a day, on Saturdays and EVEN Christmas vacation. WOW -- that could add a lot of stress to a young boy's life. Everyday Garrett asks me if I will home school him if Obama is President. Even as I type they are upstairs glued to the TV to see who is going to be President. Looks like I"ll be talking to my kids about why I won't be homeschooling them anytime soon.:)
On one hand, darn older kids at school that started the silly rumor about Obama making them go to school over Christmas Break. On the other hand, good for school for having the kids vote (where the rumor began) to get them interested in voting early. I don't remember hearing about voting until my Sr. year in civics class. "Rock the vote!":) We have spent the week talking about voting and how we are all free to vote for who we want to vote for. That we don't judge others for voting or believing differently than we do. Also that we can believe differently within our family. I love what Tom Brokaw just recited:
There are Boy Scouts in "blue states" and Boy Scouts in "red states." There is a God in "red states" and a God in "blue states."
We are the UNITED STATES of AMERICA.
We are the UNITED STATES of AMERICA.

I like that quote. It didn't turn out like I'd hoped, but it's still the only place I want to live. Obama may surprise me, yet. (Though, school on Saturdays sounds good to ME.)
Very good post MEgan! I agree with good ole' Tom B.
My kids too were told some odd things at school as they prepared for their mock election. Seemed like each night we were going to the candidates websites to research really Obama wants to go to school on Saturdays (honestly!). But, kudos for the children caring about items that have relevance to them.
Gram was on the edge of her bed all night awaiting the outcome. :)
On to the holiday season....
Love ya,
Rene
It's so funny how kids get so into the elections. When I went to vote yesterday Caleb told me I had to wear red. Caleb did come home with some strange ideas like Obama wants to give money to crazy people and he hates white people. Although I think he got that from a neighbor, not at school. I hope.
My kids came home and told me that we are going to have all of our guns taken away and Wells Fargo Bank will now be out of business (one of her friend's dad works there). Weird. We just did the CITIZEN section in Webelos and had great discussions about how we can all be good citizens regardless of party affiliation! We also talked about the fact that we need to support whoever the President is... :)
Guess we'll just have to wait and see which "rumors" come to pass. Candidates often say/promise lots of things that they can't really pull off anyway. I think Obama is going to be much more in the middle of left and right than we were led to believe in order to survive in his new office.
I remember voting for the President in 6th grade when Nixon and Kennedy were running. I had really good teachers in that district. I think it's REALLY important that children get the gist of it all as early as possible. Some of my seminary students had more evolved opinions than I did!
My kids up here in Cache Valley came home with same rumors about having to go to school all day and over holidays and summer. Where did they get these ideas?
