HOURS, that is.
Quite a few years ago, we buckled down and got to business putting together our families 72 hour kits. I just googled 72 hour kits and found many different lists. I compiled a few of them and came up with a pretty comprehensive list.

As noted on the lists, we have updated our clothing and food in our kits every 6 months(usually when you change the good old batteries in the smoke alarms and flip the mattress (boy am I glad to report we bought a new mattress last year and never have to flip again) ANYWAY -- when daylight savings comes and goes -- so do our batteries and clothes in our 72 hour kits. Or so we thought.
Lately, I've been feeling like it's been much more than 6 months since we rotated our kits. After several weeks went by with that nagging feeling...we finally got to it last Monday.
First of all, poor Libbie had size 2 pj's in there (hmm, must have been more than 6 months!) and there were plenty of other things that needed updating.

..including this Sponge Bob Square Pants hat. (The kids were old enough now to catch on to the fact that I put it in the kit so I didn't have to see it on them all the time.:))
I think we would have survived for sure...but now, bring it on! (Well not really, we really just want those kits to sit there and never have to use them) BUT, if we did...we're prepared.
We talked to our kids about the earthquake in Haiti and how we live on a fault line here with an expected earthquake at anytime...which of course scared the pants off them. I told them I'd been in quite a few earthquakes and I was still alive...seemed to calm them. Anyway, at the end of the night Gavin says "Man, I hope we have an earthquake tomorrow -- this is some cool stuff!"
I have to agree, we have some great stuff to keep us going for a few days -- or more. We have always kept our stuff in large backpacking packs...and this time we had to add a pack..guess our family is growing.:)

This is so great! I was just discussing this with my sister. I have all of the stuff for our 72 hour kits, but it's all down in the storeroom and not all together. I think it is so important, especially when you see what has happened in past disasters. It takes a while for help to come-no matter where you are. I love that our church encourages us to be prepared!
We just had that talk the other day about what we do if there is one at night. Who gets which kids and where we all go. I have been thinking about it alot latley, which makes it hard for me to go to sleep. We just have some 72 hr kits that were givin to us by Jims work. I need to add clothes to them, and now that you posted this I will do it today. Thanks Meegz
I am reminded to do that rotating thing so often, I just put it off. I am sure that it has bee probably 2 years since I packed all of them. I am sure that the kids would really enjoy fitting into the 3 sizes too small pair of shoes as well as clothes. I guess our FHE this week will be to do the same thing. ROTATE!!!! It just take breaking down and doing it. Aren't we glad that we don't have 10 kids to do it for.
Thanks for my most recent reminder, maybe I will follow through this time.
Looks like fun! I'm glad you're prepared. Now I need to get on top of that project.
Oh, and that quilt on the back of your couch sure looks cool! =) And warm!!

Interesting- I've had the same 72 hour stuff nagging at me. I think that as a mom it's impossible to see the devestation in Haiti and not feel the desire to prepare your own family.
Hey, send that list this way, good idea to update the kits. You are always on the ball!
Yeah, we have to update/rotate our too...actually I think there won't be much rotation involved as the food is pretty old! Thanks for the shove, I'll do it when I get home, I promise:). See you soon!
