In the state of Utah July 24th is a holiday called Pioneer Day.
A pioneer is defined as "one who is the first to do something", or "one who opens up the way for others".
Using this definition, tell us about pioneers in your family.
Who was the first to graduate from college, first to join a new religion or move away from family. Use this definition to share a piece of your family history.
First of all, my Mother is a Pioneer on her side of the family. She was the first to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has paved the way so that I can have the family that I do today. I credit her for MANY of my blessings!
I am a pioneer in my family as far as graduating from a 4 year college. I was the first in my family -- I'm sure others before me have graduated - I just don't know about it.
I am the first one in my family to run a Marathon - now that's worth some credit.:)
I almost said I was the first female to serve a mission for the LDS church but I remembered my Grandma Ranney(Dad's Mom) served a mission in Mexico. My Grandpa Ranney and Uncle Nelson Ranney also served missions.
When all is said and done -- I will go back to my Mom. She is a true Pioneer to me -- thanks Mom, I love you!
We will all face trials, whether they are physical, emotional, spiritual or all three in one. All that matters is how we make it through them.
I will always remember those who came before me in every facet of life, to make my life a lot easier.

As far as coming across the country pioneers go, you greatgrandmother (Granny, my mom's mom) came on a train from Kentucky around 1920 to AZ which was a real frontier then. I don't think AZ joined the Union till 1921 or something like that. She came with her mom, dad and most of their siblings - the married ones stayed in KY. And your greatgrandmother (Grandma Syd, Papa Phil's mom) came in a covered wager when she was a young child to AZ with her mom, dad and brother from TX. They actually went back and forth at least once in wagons. Ond believe it or not, I am not the first one in my family to join the church. We all joined independently of one another (all too reticent to try to convince others I think) but Granny's brother (we called him Uncle Pop, have to look up his real name) married a member of the church, he was baptized and they raised their family in the church. My mom's brother, Uncle Tommy, also married a member and had 8 children under the covenant. My great aunt (your great great) Betty on Papa Phil's side was a staunch member of the Camp Verde Branch when I was growing up. I can say that I was a pioneer in our family in that I moved to Hawaii without any purpose other than experiencing living there (ie, not in the service or on a mission)!
Thanks for the pix of the hole in the rock...that's a great angle, you can really see it. John talked about it in his talk in church and after hearing what he had to say and seeing the picture, I get it!
Love you...keep up the great blogging!
Thanks for the info. You are still a pioneer in my eyes!!:)
